Description

The possibly mid- to late-19th century war game set comprises two sets of small (5.6 x 2.3cm) cards each carrying a coloured drawing of a figure or artifice associated with battle. The cards are set on small pressed steel stands with a folding card chess-style board ruled into 10 x 10 squares. The two sets of cards comprise: British (red-backed cards): 1 – Commander in Chief; 1- Brigadier General; 2 – Colonels; 2 – Majors; 3 – Captains; 3 – Lieutenants (one without stand); 1 – Spy; 4 – Serjeants; 3 – Sappers; 8 – Scouts (two without stands); 3 – Mines; 1 – Flag. French (blue backed cards): 1 – Chef d’Armee; 1 – General de Brigade (without stand); 1 – Colonel; 2 – Commandants; 3 – Capitaines (one without stand); 4 – Lieutenants; 3 – Sergents; 1 – Espion; 4 – Sapeurs; 7 – Eclaireurs (one without stand); 3 – Mines (one without stand); 1 – Drapeau. The cards mainly appear to be clean and free from damage, although one French mine has been folded. Some bases are slightly distorted and show surface corrosion. The board is complete, but with some rubbing at the edges and corners and slight staining on the playing surface.
